I love Battlefield2, but I’ve not played it in a long time. It’s a great game and really rewards teamplay. Some people find it buggy, but I’ve never had any problems, until now that is.

The problem was that there is a new patch available (1.5), and it’s big, a massive 2GB! In order to install the 1.5 patch, you need a full 1.41 patch, that comes in at 500MB! When you’re on a fixed bandwidth connection, like with Sky or BT, you might only have a 2GB download limit per month, downloading the patch will put you over!

I had loads of problems trying to get everything to work, I had the game installed, tried the patches, but the 1.41 patch didn’t seem to do anything. I then installed the 1.5 patch afterwards and it seemed to go on fine. Loaded the game up but it still reported as version 1.0, Odd. It turns out that after a whole load of checking everything (hardware, registry, internet, CD keys) that my problem was the 1.41 patch didn’t download correctly and was corrupted. Once I downloaded it again everything went smoothly! Installed it, then 1.5 afterwards, started the game, logged in everything was great! Then I got an ‘invalid CD key notice’, turns out that your CD key needs to be encrypted in your registry. If you get this message, try the tool on BF2S

Let me know how you get on!

Having played Burnout on the xbox a long time ago, I really wanted to be able to play it again, I thought that Burnout 3 just couldn’t be beaten, it was slick, fast paced, sometimes annoying, but the crashes that you could construct (or destruct) were amazing to watch, I often spent hours playing with friends so that we could create some amazing smashes, I’m pretty sure that my neighbours at the time didn’t appreciate the cheers coming from my living room once we’d achieve the targets!

Having got Burnout Paradise on the PC (if you haven’t got it, you can get it on amazon here: Burnout Paradise PC (Ultimate Box Edition). I have to say that though I have a fairly decent computer, I was once again surprised at the level of detail in the game. The graphics are really slick, the driving is so fast too, it’s hard to believe that it’s all being drawn in real time, I really wonder how come this is possible, but games like GTA suffer, while I appreciate there are differences, it makes me wonder why Rockstar dumped Criterion’s Renderware when they did, I think it’s really come of age lately.

I’ve got a Burnout Paradise Save Game (Windows Installer MSI file, 316KB), to help people get started, it’s only just got less than 30 cars out of the available 75, so there’s still loads to do, but the Class A licence has been achieved. To use the save game, simply click on the link and run the MSI file, it should install my save game automatically, though it may overwrite yours.

Let me know how you get on in the game!

If, like me, you experienced issues with rockstar’s latest release of their game Grand Theft Auto IV (if, you haven’t you can get it here from amazon, £24.99), you may have noticed that it probably doesn’t run all that hot on your machine (if it’s not at least dual core). First thing I would normally have done is tweak with the settings a little bit, but you might find that if you can play games like crisis, you would have thought that you’d be able to play GTAIV at a reasonable level of detail. It turns out that perhaps the settings levels allow for just too much detail to be rendered on-screen, making the game perform poorly on less powerful systems. In this case, I would suggest move the sliders all the way to the left (down to 1) and then try the game again.

Unfortunately for me, this didn’t help, so in the end I shelled out and bought:

new motherboard (gibabyte p35 DS3R – approx £50)

2GB memory (crucial 800mhz – approx £22)

cpu (intel core 2 duo @ 2.6ghz – approx £123)

power supply (coolermaster 550w – approx £50)

Far cheaper than buying a whole new computer! I didn’t feel the need to change my gfx card (an Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950pro), it seemed to handle everything ok (not great mind you), but the processing power from the new cpu seemed to do the trick. Now the game runs very smoothly indeed, and I’m only running the memory in single channel mode (only 1 stick of memory is in the computer), all I have to do is add a another stick of memory (crucial 800mhz – approx £22) and get another performance boost!

UPDATE: Noticed that when my website was moved the URL to the save game download stopped working, ’tis fixed now!

So, played Codemasters Race Driver: GRID and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting too much, having played previous versions on the xbox, they were no GT beater. I was however quite impressed when I started to play this game, it’s very slick! There is a real nice polished feel to everything in the game from the soothing menu music to the very simple menu interface. The visuals in the game are perhaps some of the best that I’ve ever come across in a codemasters game, of course to get the best, you’ll need a decent graphics card. After playing my way through the game, I was always taken back with the visual quality, often watching the replays to see the car from every angle, much like I did with GT, though the replays on GRID seem so much more realistic with the camera wobble and everything.

I’ve got a save game that you can download and use buy lots of cars etc test all the tracks without having to do all the hard work of getting to the top, of course, this save game will only work on the PC.

Race Driver: GRID PC savegame (1.5MB, MSI), just download and run it, when you start GRID next time, my save game will automatically be loaded, be careful though, this save game may interfere with your own older save game, so make a backup before you do anything.

Need to buy a copy of the game? No problem, here’s a link on amazon to get Race Drive: GRID fix: Buy Race Driver: GRID (PC DVD), it even has free delivery! Bargain!

You’ll probably be interested in the Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box edition save game, that game is great fun!
